Cushions and benches: what actually helps
A short, opinionated buying guide to the few things that make the floor comfortable — and the fill, covers, and hinges that separate the good from the junk.

You need less than the internet wants to sell you. For most people, comfortable floor living comes down to two or three well-chosen objects. Here’s what matters when you pick them.
A cushion to raise your hips
The single most useful purchase is a firm cushion that lifts your hips above your knees. Sit on the front edge of it and your pelvis tips forward, your low back stops rounding, and cross-legged sitting suddenly becomes sustainable.
Look for buckwheat-hull fill with a zippered inner liner — it holds its shape for years and you can pour some out to tune the height. A removable, washable cover is non-negotiable on something you sweat and sit on daily. Pair the round cushion (a zafu) with a flat mat (a zabuton) and your knees and ankles get a soft place to land, too. Cheap all-foam “zafu-shaped” pillows compress flat and quietly wreck your posture — skip them.
A bench, if you love kneeling
Kneeling — seiza — is the most restful upright floor posture there is, but it loads the ankles and knees. A seiza bench takes that load: you straddle it and your shins tuck underneath. The quality tells are a curved seat (so you need no cushion) and either detachable legs or locking magnetic hinges — plain friction hinges can fold under you mid-sit.
Back support, if your back complains
The number-one reason Westerners abandon the floor is lower-back fatigue. A floor chair with a rigid frame — the classic is the BackJack — gives real support at ground level. The rigid frame is the whole point; soft folding “floor chairs” collapse and support nothing. Add a cushion under you, since most have thin foam.
The one mobility prop worth it
A heel wedge or slant board raises your heels a couple of inches, which instantly unlocks a deeper, more upright squat while your ankles slowly open up. A stack of books does the same job for free — but an adjustable board is nicer to keep by the door.
Firm fill, washable covers, a frame or hinge that won’t fail. Get those three things right and almost any brand is fine.
That’s the whole shelf. A cushion set, maybe a bench, maybe a back-support seat, and a wedge. Everything else is optional — and a lot of it is just a nicer-looking version of these four.
