Why live low

The case for floor living is strong enough to make plainly and nuanced enough to keep interesting. Here it is with the caveats left in — because a claim you can trust is worth more than one that sounds good.

The one test worth taking

Can you get off the floor?

In a Brazilian study of 2,002 adults aged 51–80, researchers scored how people lowered to the floor and stood back up — ten points, minus one for each hand, knee, or support used. Over about six years, each single point of a better score came with roughly 21% better survival, and the lowest scorers died at five to six times the rate of the highest.

A larger 2025 follow-up of 4,282 people tracked for a median of twelve years found the same shape, more starkly: a perfect ten carried about a 3.7% death rate, versus 42% for the lowest scorers.

Range you keep

Use it, or slowly lose it

A full resting squat asks for around 35° of ankle bend and deep hip flexion. Most Western adults can't find it — not because of anatomy, but because a life of chairs never asks for the range, so the calf and hips quietly tighten. Populations that still sit on the floor keep markedly more hip rotation and flexion into old age.

The point isn't that the floor magically stretches you. It's that chairs let you live in a narrow slice of your available movement, and the floor gently insists on the rest of it.

The nuance everyone skips

Kind to hips, a risk to knees

Here's the caveat the wellness internet leaves out. Populations that squat and kneel for hours a day show strikingly low hip arthritis — but more knee osteoarthritis. In the Beijing Osteoarthritis Study, hours of daily squatting roughly doubled the odds of knee OA.

So we don't preach marathon squat-holds. We preach variety, moderation, and pain-free range: many short visits to many positions, not one punishing posture held for an hour.

The real mechanism

The magic is in the transitions

A room without chairs makes you get up and down dozens of times a day. Each rise from the floor is an unscheduled squat. This is where floor living most plausibly earns its keep — not in the sitting, but in the endless, low-grade, get-up-and-do-it-again movement it forces.

It rhymes with what we know: breaking up long sitting improves blood sugar and circulation, and it's the interruptions that help, not the posture you interrupt it with. The floor is simply a very good excuse to keep moving.

Myths vs evidence

Four claims we won't repeat

Being honest about what floor living doesn't do is how we earn the right to tell you what it does.

“Floor sitting strengthens your core.”

Unsupported sitting raises low-level muscle activation, but activation is not training. Strength needs load near failure — which sitting never approaches.

“Sitting on the floor gives you myofascial release.”

There is no research on this at all. Fascia is real; the idea that resting on the ground “releases” it borrows credibility from the (already thin) foam-rolling literature.

“Floor sitting fixes your posture and back pain.”

A review of reviews found no consensus that any posture causes back pain. Oddly, slumped sitting was the lowest-pressure posture in the best in-vivo disc study.

“Standing desks burn serious calories.”

Standing beats sitting by about 9 kcal an hour. Real, but small. The energy that matters is in the transitions — getting up and down — not in holding still while upright.

The bottom line

Variety and movement beat any single “correct” posture. Floor living's real gift is that it keeps putting you on the ground and asking you to get back up.
