Wakelyns Agroforestry
A pioneering alley-cropping farm where long rows of trees shelter wheat, squash, and lentils between them.
Established in 1994 by plant pathologist Professor Martin Wolfe and Ann Wolfe, Wakelyns is a pioneering organic agroforestry farm. Long north–south rows of trees — more than fifty apple varieties, plus pears, cherries, plums, walnuts, and coppiced willow and hazel — alternate with alleys of population wheat, squash, and lentils.
The design shelters crops, houses wildlife, and spreads risk across a diversity of harvests. Now run by the next generation, Wakelyns is a working demonstration that trees and arable farming belong together.
