    The Canopy

    The tall trees that set the roof of the forest

    The canopy is the overstory — the tallest, longest-lived trees that shape the light and character of everything below. In a food forest these are usually full-size fruit and nut trees, sometimes mixed with nitrogen-fixing trees like black locust that feed their neighbours.

    The Understory

    Smaller trees that thrive in filtered light

    3–9 m (10–30 ft)

    Beneath the canopy sits the low-tree or understory layer: smaller trees, often on dwarfing rootstock, that are happy in the filtered light of the big trees. Pawpaws and persimmons naturally grow as forest-edge understory species, so they feel right at home here.

    The Shrub Layer

    Berries and bushes at arm's reach

    Up to 3 m (10 ft)

    The shrub layer is where a lot of the everyday harvest lives — soft fruit and berries at a comfortable picking height. Many are woodland-edge plants that fruit well in partial shade, from currants and gooseberries to elderberry.

    The Herbaceous Layer

    Perennial herbs and greens that return each year

    Knee to waist high

    Non-woody plants that die back and return each season make up the herbaceous layer — perennial vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, and hard-working support plants. This is the layer that most rewards a little diversity.

    The Ground Cover

    A living mulch that never leaves soil bare

    Ankle high & spreading

    Low, spreading plants knit across the soil surface, suppressing weeds, holding moisture, and keeping the ground cool and covered. In permaculture, bare soil is a wound to be dressed — the ground-cover layer is the living bandage.

    The Root Layer

    The harvest hidden beneath the soil

    Below ground

    The rhizosphere is the underground layer — root crops and tubers that use the soil itself as growing space, slotting in below plants that reach for the sky. Because they occupy a different zone, they rarely compete with the layers above.

    The Vertical Layer

    Climbers that stitch the forest together

    Spanning every layer

    Vines and climbers make use of the one dimension nothing else claims: the vertical space between the layers. Trained up a sturdy tree or trellis, they turn trunks and edges into extra growing surface.

The layer count is a design convention, not a law. Where there's rich soil life or standing water, these earn their place too.

The Fungal Layer

The mycelial internet beneath your feet

Many designers add an eighth layer that Robert Hart's original seven left implicit: the fungal network threading through the soil. Mycorrhizal fungi partner with plant roots, trading water and minerals for sugars and linking the whole forest into one cooperative web.

The Aquatic Layer

Ponds and wet edges, where a ninth layer begins

Where there is water, some frameworks add a ninth layer: the aquatic and wetland zone. A pond or a boggy edge multiplies the food forest's diversity, offering habitat for frogs and dragonflies, storing water, and growing crops no dry-land layer can.

Layers give it structure. Guilds give it life.
