Las Cañadas — Bosque de Niebla
A cooperative agroecology centre guarding one of Mexico's last cloud forests while feeding its community.
Las Cañadas is a cooperative Center for Agroecology and Permaculture on more than 300 hectares in the rare cloud-forest region of Veracruz. It conserves some 265 hectares of forest and, in 1998, established Mexico’s first ecological easement to protect it in perpetuity.
Around that conserved core, the cooperative practises seed stewardship, regenerative food production, and education, hosting an annual permaculture festival — a model of caring for a threatened ecosystem while living from it.
