Plants That Do More Than One Job
Nitrogen fixers, dynamic accumulators, and other hard workers that quietly feed the whole forest.
One of permaculture’s favourite ideas is stacking functions: designing so that each element does several jobs at once. A chicken isn’t just eggs — it’s also pest control, manure, and tillage. The same is true of plants. The most valuable species in a food forest are the ones working the hardest behind the scenes.
Nitrogen fixers — free fertiliser from thin air
Nitrogen is the nutrient plants crave most, and certain species partner with soil bacteria to pull it straight out of the air and into the ground. Plant these among your fruit trees and you cut your need for fertiliser dramatically:
- Ground layer: clover, vetch, lupin, peas and beans.
- Shrub layer: sea buckthorn, autumn olive, Siberian pea shrub.
- Canopy layer: alder, black locust.
Many growers plant extra nitrogen fixers, then chop them down over time as the fruit trees mature — a technique sometimes called “chop and drop.”
Dynamic accumulators — miners of the deep
Some plants send roots far below the reach of others, drawing up minerals from the subsoil and storing them in their leaves. Cut those leaves and lay them on the ground, and you’ve transferred that fertility to the surface where shallow-rooted plants can use it. Comfrey is the classic example; dandelion, yarrow, and nettle do similar work.
Multi-taskers worth knowing
- Comfrey — dynamic accumulator, mulch factory, pollinator plant, all in one.
- Daffodils — a living fence against grass and burrowing rodents around a tree’s base.
- Yarrow — pollinator magnet, medicinal herb, and accumulator.
- Clover — nitrogen fixer, ground cover, and bee forage together.
The takeaway
When you choose a plant for a food forest, ask what else it can do. Fruit is lovely, but the plants that feed the soil, shelter the pollinators, and mulch their neighbours are what make the whole system stand on its own.
