Meet the states, one at a time.
People describe a lot of what the nervous system does in terms of a few broad states. They're not boxes you're stuck in — think of them more like weather that moves through. Here are the main ones, in plain language.
Settled
Safe enough. You can think, feel, connect, rest. Things aren't necessarily perfect — but there's room. This is the state most of the healing work is quietly aiming to make more available.
Activated (fight-or-flight)
Revved up. Anxious, urgent, irritable, on guard, hard to sit still. Energy is high and mobilized — the body is ready to do something about a threat, whether or not there's one to do something about.
Shut down
The other direction: flat, numb, foggy, heavy, checked-out. When fighting or fleeing didn't work or wasn't possible, the body can pull the plug to protect you. It's not laziness. It's a survival setting.
The blends — like "wired and tired"
Here's the part that's easy to miss: these aren't switches, they're more like dials, and more than one can be up at once. A very common blend is feeling activated underneath and shut down on top — anxious and exhausted at the same time. If that's the one that rings true, you're not broken, and you're far from alone.
There's a fuller version of this on theUnderstand page, whenever you want it.
You can leave the path at any step — nothing here is required.
