This takes about 3 minutes. You’ll rock or sway slowly. No sound, in any position — sitting, standing, or lying down.
- However you’re positioned, start the smallest sway — side to side, or gently front to back. Barely anything at first.
- Let it find a rhythm that feels good, like you’re being rocked. Slow is nicer than big. Your eyes can be open or closed, whatever’s comfortable.
- If a hand wants to rest on your chest or belly as you sway, let it. If a hum or a sigh joins in, let that too.
- Let the movement be its own thing for a minute or two. There’s nowhere to get to.
- When you’re ready, let the sway slowly get smaller until it stops on its own, and notice how you feel.
Rocking, fidgeting, or stimming however your body likes is exactly right here. Stop whenever you want.
Why this works →
Slow, rhythmic movement is one of the oldest ways a nervous system soothes itself — it's what rocking a baby is doing. When things feel flat or frozen, a small sway invites a little safe movement back without asking for much.
Lineage: Rhythmic self-regulation; found across somatic traditions. Last reviewed 2026-07-04.
