Trauma-sensitive yoga (TCTSY)
Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga is the most-researched yoga-for-trauma variant, with a 2014 randomized trial in women with chronic PTSD and a multi-year VA trial. General "trauma-informed yoga" is unregulated; only the TCTSY-F credential is the specifically studied form.
- Who it tends to fit
- People who want a body-based, movement approach with a strong emphasis on choice — you're always invited, never instructed, and nothing is checked or corrected.
- Who it may not fit
- Anyone expecting a fitness or flexibility workout; this is about interoception and agency, not the poses.
- Cost & access
- Varies widely — group classes to individual sessions; often more affordable than one-to-one therapy. Look for the TCTSY-F credential specifically.
- Credentials
- Certified, but not necessarily licensed — check both
Trauma-sensitive yoga takes ordinary gentle yoga and strips out everything coercive about it. There are no adjustments, no “hold it here,” no mirror, no performance. The whole point is the opposite: you’re constantly invited to notice what you feel and to choose — bend more or less, or not at all.
That emphasis on choice and interoception (sensing your own body from the inside) is what makes it trauma-sensitive, and it’s why the studied form is a specific credential rather than just “yoga for stress.” For people for whom sitting still with the mind is too much, moving the body with this much permission can be a kinder doorway.
