Classic psychedelics (LSD & psilocybin)
LSD and psilocybin work mainly through the 5-HT2A receptor, which increases sensory and cortical "gain" (the everything-is-higher-resolution quality) and also drives sympathetic activation — so they can feel embodying and edgy at the same time. Psilocybin is shorter and a bit "cleaner" than LSD, which may be why people often describe it as slightly more settling. Both quiet the brain's default-mode network (the self-referential, ruminating hub), and both have a well-documented afterglow. Clinical evidence for depression is growing but still rests on small trials that are hard to blind.
- Who it tends to fit
- People exploring within legal, screened, supported research or therapeutic settings — where set, setting, and integration are taken seriously.
- Who it may not fit
- Anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis, significant cardiovascular issues, or unprocessed trauma that a strong experience could destabilize; and anyone on serotonergic medication (interaction risk).
- Cost & access
- Controlled substances in most places, with a growing set of research programs and a few decriminalized or regulated jurisdictions. Not a casual or self-directed tool.
- Legal status
- Legal only within approved research or regulated programs; a controlled substance otherwise
- Credentials
- An unregulated title — anyone can use it, so check credentials
The classic psychedelics can make the world vivid and loosen the grip of rigid, ruminating thought — which is part of why rigid low moods sometimes lift after them. But they’re activating, not calming, in the body: heart rate goes up, and the experience can be as edgy as it is expansive.
Held honestly, these sit in the “borrowed state” column, and firmly in the “only with real support” column. The afterglow and the openness they can leave behind are genuine, but they become lasting change through integration and practice, not through the trip alone. As everywhere on this page: no dosing, no sourcing, no how-to — the point here is understanding what these states are and aren’t, and remembering the room they hint at is reachable by safer doors.
Free first steps
- The 'higher resolution, more present in the body' quality has a free cousin: slow orienting and panoramic vision practices sharpen presence without the activation
- Treat any strong experience as a reference point, then build the capacity to find calm by slower, repeatable means
