A 1917 market hall in Old Oakland, rebuilt around a courtyard: a 20-unit cohousing community, affordable rental apartments, restaurants, offices, and cultural space under one historic roof. It is two blocks from BART and about fifteen minutes from Berkeley — the nearest built answer to this site's whole argument, even if it stays low-rise.

What to steal: the coalition. A community development corporation (EBALDC) held the project together, so cohousing, affordable housing, and commerce could share one roof and one loan — the finance box American lenders said doesn't exist.
